Cassandra Hernandez is not just a candidate for mayor; she is a native daughter of El Paso and has served on the El Paso City Council Representing district 3 with dozens of accomplishments to tout. Born to a mother who migrated from Mexico, Cassandra’s life story began at the top of the Santa Fe Bridge where her grandmother married an El Pasoans. Educated in El Paso’s public schools, she emerged as a proud graduate of Bel Air High School from Ysleta Independent School District. Cassandra and her siblings lived in affordable housing throughout El Paso’s poorest communities. El Paso has provided a network of supportive services to Cassandra and her family and afforded her every opportunity to get on track as a change maker.
Cassandra’s academic journey led her to the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), where she not only earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a minor in Criminal Justice but also a Master of Public Administration with a focus on Public Policy and Management. Her time at UTEP was marked by leadership, notably as the president of the Master of Public Administration Student Association. Cassandra’s commitment to education extended beyond her studies as she shared her knowledge as a volunteer adjunct government instructor at El Paso Community College, teaching State and Local Government.
Her civic engagement started early, serving as President of her neighborhood association. Here, Cassandra showcased her ability to lead and deliver, securing tens and thousands in funding for local improvements. Her professional journey is equally impressive, spanning roles from Deputy Director at Workforce Solutions Borderplex to Director of Policy and Programs at the El Paso Chamber, focusing on workforce development.
Cassandra’s public service elevated by her time as support staff for former City Representatives Susie Byrd and Steve Ortega, providing her with a profound understanding of El Paso’s needs. She stands out as the sole mayoral candidate with extensive experience working with or representing city council district offices, covering over half of El Paso’s constituents.
Her involvement in numerous boards and commissions including the City of El Paso Employees Retirement Trust, the City’s Financial Oversight and Audit Committee and the Metropolitan Planning Organization. Cassandra also contributes to community and professional development as a member of the Executive Women’s Lions Club and UTEP’s MPA advisory board.
Currently serving her second term in her last year as the City Council Representative for District 3, Cassandra represents parts of Eastside and Lower Valley and the Airport, advocating for improved transportation and community services.
Cassandra Hernandez’s life and career reflect the passion she has supporting transformative change. She is a proud homeowner in the Rosedale Neighborhood, where she resides with her young children and loving family. As mayor, she pledges to continue her work towards a brighter, more inclusive future for all El Pasoans, building on her deep understanding of our city’s unique challenges and opportunities.
